Most event space in Soho falls into one of two camps: the blank hotel room you decorate into life, or the corner of a busy bar you never quite own. This is neither. It's a working cocktail bar, low ceilings, candlelight, brick alcoves, leather Chesterfields, that happens to be hidden under Broadwick Street, and for the night it's booked, it's yours.
That changes how the evening runs. The atmosphere is already built, so there's nothing to hire in and nothing to dress. The bar is staffed by the bartenders who work it every night, not agency staff meeting the room for the first time. And because the entrance is an unmarked red door, arrival feels like being let in on something, which is a better start to a party than a laminated sign in a lobby.
It's why the same room works as a corporate venue on a Thursday, a birthday party venue on a Friday, and a full private hire on a Saturday. The space doesn't change. Who it belongs to does.
Worth saying plainly, because a mismatched booking is a bad night for everyone. Basement Sate is a basement: low ceilings, candlelight, no daylight and no windows. If you want a bright room or an outdoor terrace, book elsewhere.
It's also small. 110 standing is the ceiling, not a starting point, so a 200-person party won't fit. The room is built around the drinks and around being able to hear the person opposite you, so if what you want is a late club night, this isn't it. Basement Sate doesn't take hen or stag parties.
And the full venue runs on a minimum spend from £2,000, for 50 or more guests. Under 15 people, don't enquire at all, just book a table online, with no minimum spend.
