Basement Sate is a quiet cocktail bar in Soho: a candlelit basement below Broadwick Street where the music stays under the conversation and drinks come to the table. It is open until 1:30am Tuesday to Saturday and midnight on Sunday and Monday, three minutes from Oxford Circus. Tables for up to 15 book online.
Street-level bars fight the pavement all night, the door opens and the noise walks in. Down here the street stays where it is. Brick walls, a low ceiling, and candlelight do the rest. You talk at talking volume, and the person opposite hears you.
Half the noise in a busy bar is the scrum for the bartender's attention. We come to you. Sit down, order, talk, and the drinks arrive, made properly, from a cocktail list that changes with the seasons.
Most of the capital's serious cocktail rooms turn the volume up as the night goes on, and most of the quiet rooms call time at eleven. This one does neither. If you've been crossing town for somewhere you can hear yourself think, it's three minutes from Oxford Circus. The same goes if you're after mocktails in central London: ten of them, £11, served to the table.
The room is low-lit and grown-up, not hushed. There's a hum to it on a good night, it just never climbs to the point where you're mouthing words across the table. If you want the full hidden-bar treatment, that's here too: no sign, a red door, stairs going down.

8 Broadwick Street, Soho, W1F 8HN. The quieter end of Soho after dark. Red door, downstairs, three minutes from Oxford Circus.
Sun & Mon until midnight, Tue to Sat until 1:30am. Weeknights you can usually walk in. Weekends, book.
Signature and classic cocktails at £13 to £15, ten proper 0% cocktails at £11, champagne, wine, and a short dessert list.
The street's reputation writes cheques its licences don't cash: most bars in Soho call last orders between 11pm and midnight. Genuinely late rooms are rare, and most of the ones that exist solve it by becoming clubs, lights down, volume up, conversation over.
Same room, same table service, same list, just later. A proper cocktail after the theatre, a last drink after dinner, or the place you move to when everywhere else rings the bell.
By 12:30 the street has thinned, the room has settled, and the bartenders have time to talk you into something off-list. Regulars know this. It's the closest Soho gets to having the place to yourself.
No ticket, no minimum spend, no queue with a rope. If you're comparing bars in Soho for a late one, the short version: come downstairs, sit down, and order properly at half past midnight.
Below street level, mostly. Brick and a low ceiling soak up the noise that bounces around a street-front room, and a staircase between you and the pavement keeps the crowd honest. It also matters which end you're on: Broadwick Street goes quieter after dark than Old Compton ever does, and that's where our red door is.
Fewer than you'd hope. Most rooms quiet enough to talk in close by midnight, and most rooms open past midnight are too loud to talk in. We serve until 1:30am Tuesday to Saturday, and the room stays at conversation volume the whole way through.
Before 6pm, plenty. After 9pm, almost none, a Soho pub on a Friday is a standing crowd and a queue three deep at the bar. If what you actually want is the quiet-pub feeling late in the evening, somewhere to sit down, talk, and drink something good, a candlelit basement with table service does that job better than the pubs do.
That's most of what the room is for. There's music, but it sits under the conversation rather than over it, and the tables are far enough apart that yours stays yours. Couples and interviews-gone-well are half the room most nights.
Tuesday to Thursday you can usually walk in. Friday and Saturday, book, a quiet table is exactly what everyone else wants too. Tables book online in seconds.
Until 1:30am Tuesday to Saturday, and until midnight on Sunday and Monday. The hour after midnight is the quietest of the night, and quietly the best.
