Tripadvisor and Google measure different crowds. Tripadvisor skews to visitors who found us by accident; Google to people who came for the room. We publish both.

★★★★★

"Incredible cocktail bar, nice and quiet speakeasy vibe with amazing choices and not bad prices. Coming from Edinburgh, it blows away any of our local cocktail bars and was honestly some of the best I've ever had."

"A delightful hidden gem, unmarked from the street and behind an intimidating door down the stairs. Inside was a chill, moody bar and dessert service. Great place for a nightcap!"

"Came here for a date and it's the perfect spot — intimate, not too noisy and well made drinks."

Priya Patel · Google, August 2026

"One of the cosiest speakeasies I've been to, amazing for a date or just hanging out with friends. The drinks and service are above and beyond."

"Good place to have a conversation, on Sat got busy after 11pm, drinks about £14, good to talk, nice chill vibe with background music, all sort of ages come."

"We found this cocktail bar by chance walking past and were intrigued. The service was incredible, Chantelle provided excellent personalised service and her cocktails were incredible."

"Basement Sate is hands down one of the best cocktail bars in Soho, London. Hidden away behind an unassuming door, this speakeasy-style serves expertly crafted cocktails, the best I've had in the city."

"Fantastic location. Lovely underground speakeasy atmosphere. Decor is amazing. Excellent drinks selection and friendly welcoming staff. 10/10"

"On the recommendation of a friend, I came here for a drinks date. The entrance is very inconspicuous so watch out as you will be second guessing whether you are in the right place."

The criticism, in the open

Three complaints come up often enough to be worth answering rather than burying.

"We got moved on after an hour"

Tables are booked in two-hour slots on Fridays and Saturdays because the room holds sixty seated and there is always a queue behind you. If nobody is waiting, nobody moves you. If you want the table for the night, book the bar area or hire a section.

"The dessert menu isn't what it was"

Fair. The dessert list is shorter than it was in 2015 and the bar is the main event now. The current list is on the desserts page and it is kept accurate.

"It's hard to find"

Deliberately, but we would rather you found us. Red door, 8 Broadwick Street, no sign, head down the stairs. Full directions with photos.

Google is the fastest place. Saying what you actually came for — the date, the team drinks, the birthday — helps the next person more than "nice bar" does. If something wasn't right, email us as well so we can put it right.
